When making trades don't let draft picks be a stumbling point. In my keeper leagues (one 7 keeper and one 8 keeper) I only place value on the 1st round picks and a little value on 2nd round picks. Mostly for the rookies, not those thrown back in the free agent pool. If you are getting a stud player and a lower pick in exchange for a lesser player and a higher draft pick don't hesitate. Is there going to be a significant difference in what is available in round 2 and round 5 or 6?
For example, this morning I traded Rob Gronkowski and 2.11 for Jermichael Finley, Demarco Murray, and 8.12.
My original offer was Gronkowski for Finley and Murray. He countered with the added picks. I jumped all over it. I really could have used that pick to grab a QB because I am not keeping one, but I can deal with that later.
In keeper leagues, you essentially keep your starting lineup. So really you are drafting back-ups, defenses, and kickers. Who cares? Don't let nickel and dime ing cost you the opportunity to improve your starting roster.

I agree completely for both keeper and dynasty, I value top-5 picks, the 6-12 picks usually are talented guys with bad landing spots. I'm too impatient for them to get the opportunity. 2nd round and beyond is a crap-shoot and you have to wait for them to develop. Once again, too impatient to wait on that too. Draft picks are great deal-closers.

Keepers certainly have less value for picks each year. Some still slip through the cracks so it's nice to keep your first. But yeah, 2.11 in a keeper isn't the end of the world

Agree 100%. My favorite way to make a trade happen is to throw in a 2nd round pick. Usually satisfies the other owner and to me it isn't a big deal.

Last offseason I said to a buddy "You go get Ryan Mathews and I will give you Finley and 1.03 for him". I knew the owner that had him was a nickel and dimer. So we went for a beer and my buddy went back and fourth with the other owner 11 times. 11 times! Bickering over 4th for 6th and and 5 for 9ths etc. I know I overpaid but I did it so I didn't have to go through all the crap.

Excellent points there. I am normally horrific at drafting, but I make up for it with finding Gens later or via the wire.
I had some horrible drafts and even made the playoffs with a team where I only had two of my originally drafted players still on my team and one of them was the kicker. For me, draft picks can bee useless, though I always maintain my first round pick and try to trade up into it. I was able to get McCoy and Calvin Johnson last year on a startup dynasty to build around.

I guess I fall somewhere in the middle on this topic. I value draft picks, while trying hard to not over value them. What I mean by that is that I value them, but I won't hesitate to throw a draft pick or two into a deal that I am trying to make if that will make the difference.
For instance, last year in one of my 16 team IDP leagues I drafted Sheard in the third round. Pretty good value there, as it turns out. I got Clayborn in the fourth round. Jury's still out on that one, but it looks promising. And I got Rudolph in the fifth round. Again it remains to be seen regarding his value, but it looks promising (although the Carlson signing baffled me). Last year in another all offense league I drafted DeMarco Murray in the second round.
So, I am always optimistic that I will find value at every draft pick. Do they all work out? Hardly. You miss way more often that you hit, but, to me there's no doubt that draft picks beyond the first round have value.

You bring up a good point about IDP leagues, the 2nd rounders now become much more valuable due to increased number of solid options of both sides of the ball.
